Before Jimmy Buffett was a franchise he was an aspiring country singer who couldn't land a big break in Nashville. Songs You Know By Heart not only captures the man's heyday of hits up to 1985, but it's also the compilation where vestiges of Buffett's former country-toned aspirations can be heard seeping from his tropical cocktail swilling, beach bum anthems. This fusion of twang and calypso has influenced such Music City success stories as Blake Shelton and George Strait's 2006 album It Just Comes Natural (which was recorded on Buffett's Shrimpboat Studio in Key West). (Think "Margaritaville." Have you ever noticed how much it sounds like a country song if you remove the steel drums?) Not everything here sounds rooted in country, of course. "Cheeseburger In Paradise" and the cowbell heavy "Fins" stand their ground on their own playful sound, but "Changes In Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" could have been penned by The Eagles and "Why Don't We Get Drunk" is honky-tonk right down to the title, even if the rest of these tunes make you want to swap your spurs for sandals.
