In many ways T-Bone Burnett is the perfect producer for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Like Gilmore, Burnett has the utmost love and respect for the folk and blues traditions, but he is also interested in expanding the horizons of those traditions. Braver Newer World contains some of Gilmore’s most basic, beautiful melodies, but it also explores extraordinary and unknown atmospheres. Take, for example, the dissonant, abstract textures of “Where Is Love Now” or “Outside the Lines,” in which the vocals hang above the music like mist over rocky ground. Gilmore has always been known for his gentle folk songs, but “Braver Newer World” and “Headed for a Fall” pair him with a horn section, which turns out to be a triumphant pairing. Underneath its unconventional arrangements, Braver Newer World offers songs that prize poise and simplicity. Like old tunes by Johnny Cash, “Borderland,” “Sally,” and “Long, Long Time” are straightforward and steadfast, but they also gleam with Gilmore’s conviction in Zen poetry.
