This absolutely stunning recording by new music trombonist/composer Jim Staley is a riveting and challenging contribution to the world of avant-garde jazz. Staley has a gutbucket style that somehow manages to incorporate remarkably advanced techniques. The choice of Borah Bergman on piano works extremely well, as his electrifying approach is a good foil to the trombonist. They are also compelling on the slower pieces. They are joined by Phoebe Legere on accordion and as a vocalist, in the tradition of Cathy Berberian. The three keep every moment interesting with wild forays, making for lots of deep listening. Together, they explore a wealth of sonorities and moods, bringing spectacular performances to the fore. Staley has to be one of the most underappreciated trombonists around, which will hopefully be rectified, at least in part, by this release.
