Recorded in January 2014 at Sacramento’s Memorial Auditorium, Unstoppable Love documents Jesus Culture at its roof-shaking, Spirit-raising best. In some ways the American counterpart to Australia’s Hillsong United, this youth outreach ministry shows no sign of slowing down in its mission. Longtime worship leaders Chris Quilala and Kim Walker-Smith return to the spotlight as they lead the band through a (mostly) original set of inspirational rockers and stirring ballads. Kicking off the set with the guitar-fueled “Sing Out,” Quilala sets a tone of ecstatic devotion that he returns to tracks like “Light of the World” and “We Stand.” Walker-Smith matches him in intensity on the buoyant “We Will Run,” the dramatic “Your Name Is Glorious,” and the soaring “Wide Open.” As on Jesus Culture’s past releases, Unstoppable Love has slower tunes that contain some of the album’s most uplifting moments. “Born of God” (a sweetly melodic number sung with restraint by Quilala) and a cover of Matt Redman’s much-loved “10,000 Reasons” (a standout for Walker-Smith) achieve a surprising intimacy in this arena-sized setting.
