Jesse Harris’ 13th album features solid collaborations with the experimental NYC duo Star Rover, duets with guitarist whiz Julian Lage, and a cowrite with avant-garde legend John Zorn on “Kafiristan.” While this might sound like a radical departure for the man best known for writing “Don’t Know Why” for Norah Jones, Harris still centers the album on his thoughtful observations on life and love, with an overall sound similar to Paul Simon’s early-‘70s work. “Did You Have to Be Happy,” “I’ve Never Seen You Cry,” and “Catch the Ash” highlight his singer/songwriter approach, which Harris says was inspired by Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush.
