Embodying the motto “less is more,” Jeremy Jay’s music achieves subtle emotional colors by sticking to pared-down lyrics, unadorned melodies, and lean instrumentation. Abandoned Apartments adheres to the approach the L.A.-raised singer/songwriter has refined since his 2007 debut, Dreamland; Jay’s vocal delivery is cool and slightly detached while drawing in listeners with carefully layered pop/rock sounds and strategic hooks. The rockabilly gestures form Jay’s early releases have been replaced by an urbane synth-pop feel humanized by the yearning he invests in his music. The piano-centered “Graveyard Shift,” the twitchy, slowly uncoiling “Red Primary Afternoon," and the darkly evocative title track have a furtive quality that brings out the mystery within their fragmented lyric scenarios. Jay inhabits the twilight mood of his music with a wistful aplomb, hinting at rendezvous on shadowy street corners and midnight trains. Whether the tempo is snappy (“Covered in Ivy”) or subdued (“I Was Waiting”), he proves himself adept at making haunting aural landscapes.
