On her 2001 Gotee Records release, The Way I Am, Kansas-born artist Jennifer Knapp offers acoustic rock and folk styles. She interlaces this with insightful and poetic lyrics that convey a depth of emotions captured in a personal, yet universal manner. With this album, as with her previous two projects, Knapp goes beyond being a singer and songwriter. She is a storyteller, inviting listeners to sit down beside her. The invitation is not one of student and teacher, but of fellow weary-worn traveler resting tenderly in the arms of the Father. Her songs speak of desiring to know God at a deeper level and seeking peace in the hectic schedules of life. The lyrics alone, in songs such as "Say Won't You Say" and "No Regrets," are enough to stir the soul, and they gain an even greater ability to touch when paired with the musical backdrop. Musically, The Way I Am is Knapp's best. The intricate and detailed music is carefully crafted to include layers of depth, all framed in a style of acoustic rock and folk. The album features the talents of the London Symphony Orchestra, producer Tony McAnany, and musicians Vinnie Cauliuta, Tony Levin, and Nick Moroch. In the end, with this release Knapp has yet to disappoint. She only serves to build and further shape the gift and talent demonstrated on her debut release, Kansas.
