Although he certainly didn’t invent jazz like he boldly claimed when he relocated to New York City in the late '20s, Jelly Roll Morton was one of the genre’s first top composers (“King Porter Stomp” and "I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say" are just two of many classics Morton penned) and was an important transition figure between ragtime and early jazz. This set has few of his famous pieces and it’s a far cry from being a “jazz biography” of Morton's career, but it does pleasantly and consistently illustrate his role as a bandleader and as an ensemble piano player.
