Featuring a sound and style similar to that of American rhythm'n'blues artist Anita Baker, the Philippine-born, US-based female singer Jaya (last name Ramsey) soars on her debut Philippine album, Jaya, released in 1996 on local independent Viva Records, a label of Viva Music Group.

Most songs on Jaya are attuned to the passionate, easy-listening love song that is so popular in the Philippines, but Jaya imbues an earnest, soulful touch that makes these songs rise above the usual easy-listening fare. Earlier in 1991, Jaya scored a Billboard Top 40 hit on a US label with the dance-inflected, "If You Leave Me Now," and the sound throughout Jaya differs significantly from it, and also differs from a 1992 album she released in Japan, A Love Album, which is oriented towards rhythm'n'blues and more modern than the music heard on Jaya.

Jaya opens on, "We'll Never Know," and immediately reveals on the part of Jaya a remarkable depth and confidence. She also shines on, "Me My Man and i," one of the album's two moderately upbeat songs (the other eight songs are ballads). Jaya's assured handling of the song makes it seem a shame more upbeat songs weren't included. Indeed, the entire album would benefit from more variety.

Several songs on Jaya gained wide radio airplay, including the tremendously popular, "Dahil Tanging Ikaw" (Because You're the Only One). Jaya sold nine times platinum (360,000 units; platinum is 40,000 units sold), a figure rarely reached on the Philippine music scene.
