In many respects this is some of the best music he’s ever made because of its directness. The songs on October Road feature lyrics dealing with growing older and wiser, the virtues and challenges of family relationships, and the redemptive power of love. The sound is bright and polished, with superb acoustic guitar mixed with strings, brushed drums, horns and jazzy piano supplied by a long list of top-drawer professional studio musicians. The tempo is laid-back throughout and Taylor’s voice and phrasing are as smooth and natural as ever. In short, it’s a first rate offering by one of popular music’s best-loved performers. And at this point no one would expect — or want — Taylor to change his winning ways.
