Christian rock quintet Jackson Waters keep their music intimate while reaching for the spark of the divine. After a well-received indie release, they invite wider attention on their Word debut Come Undone (2007). Comparisons with Maroon 5 (sweet melodies, wistful romanticism) and Coldplay (austere arrangements with aggressive guitars) are not inappropriate. What gives the group a distinctive character is the believable way they weave their faith into their songs. Jackson Waters offers themes of redemption and forgiveness in tracks like “Different,” ”Give Me Amazing Grace” and “Send Her An Angel,” casting an exalted light upon commonplace scenes. Singer David Leonard’s voice conveys both serenity and loss; his ethereal falsetto is especially effective on the title tune. The band frames their lyrics in cleanly-hewn modern rock, ranging from the rainy-day balladry of “Jamie’s Song” to the skyward thrash of “Let It Fly.” The stand-out here is “Center Of Attention,” a quietly intense statement of devotion heard on TV’s One Tree Hill. Avoiding heavy-handed proselytizing, Jackson Waters testify to their own spiritual commitment with humility and taste, and Rob Hawkins’ production lends a tight focus to the tracks.
