Hozan Yamamoto is considered one of the greatest contemporary Japanese shakuhachi players. One of Yamamoto's top skills in comparison to other Japanese shakuhachi players is his versatility, having played with Tony Scott in Music for Zen Meditation, as well as with musicians such as Ravi Shankar, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Gary Peacock, and others. But, of course, he has also made numerous traditional Japanese records. Unfortunately, most of his records are not available outside Japan. Otoño is a jazz CD produced in Spain with a group of Spanish jazz musicians, such as Chano Dominguez and Javier Paxariño. The pieces are Yamamoto's own compositions, while others are from Dominguez and Paxariño. There is a mix of jazz and Latin moods with ballads. An exquisite CD from an out of the ordinary Japanese musician. ~ Bruno Deschênes, Rovi
