Originally released as two separate albums, these two magnificent works have been combined into one release, and what a monster it is. With his deep, growling voice, and dynamic harp and guitar playing, Wolf was a force of nature. Howlin' Wolf was the Wolf's debut for Chess Records, and it contains great Wolf sides including "Red Rooster," "Spoonful," and "Wang Dang Doodle." Moanin' In the Moonlight is an equally strong primer in the Wolf school of deep blues, containing more killer tracks, such as "Smokestack Lightning," "Evil," and "I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)." If you've never heard Howlin' Wolf at full throttle, this is a great place to start. The man was a legend, and these sides show why.
