Cromagnum Man's funhouse-mirror-style distorted face on the album cover goes well with Helios Creed's ventures into the surreal, as with the shimmery, spacey percussion on "Dimension 5." Creed stays true to his tendency for science fiction themes with songs like "100 Years of Space (The Gate)," "Twilight Zone," and more. This album has a quieter, less-gritty feel to it than some of Creed's earlier work, like, say, Planet X. (Gotta love the cowboy shrimp cover art on that one, for pure sci-fi cheese factor, though, really.) Listeners who are not quite so drawn to grunge may find this release more approachable, although anyone who holds that "it's not authentic unless it makes your ears bleed" with volume may wish to seek louder pastures. Still, it's interesting to compare and contrast Cromagnum Man with Cosmic Assault or Dark Matter, Vol. 2, and Creed fans will likely want them all.
