Whether you’re an old-school space-rock disciple or new to the intergalactic rock ‘n’ roll mayhem of Hawkwind, this 2011 compilation delivers the goods. “Space Is Deep” sets the tone with two minutes and 15 seconds of ambient noise before “Orgone Accumulator” blasts off into the cosmos with nearly nine minutes of hard-driving rhythms, electric guitar-riff mantras, free-jazz saxophone, and mind-melting Moog chaos that all comes together to rock out over a bluesy backbone. “Sonic Attack” makes good on its title, with a barrage of allocated amplified bursts playing under sci-fi spoken-word instructions by Dave Brock. “Time We Left This World Today” is the token epic, spanning nearly 15 minutes as the band bends musical notes while warping guitar distortion through reels of analog tape delay. The second half of The Masters compiles various live recordings, the best being a 12-minute “Brainstorm” rocking hard and fast like astral proto-metal.
