This 60-track collection divides Hank Williams' catalog into three essential styles. The first 20 are "Honky Tonkin'," representing his upbeat barroom approach. The second 20 are "Cold, Cold Heart" and focus on Williams' aching, lonesome love songs. The final 20 are "I Saw the Light," spiritual songs that include less commonly known material. The recordings here range from standard studio versions to radio broadcasts. Williams recorded for little more than six years, leaving behind several hundred recordings. Considering the high standards of his material, even a 60-song collection is a mere introduction to the man's vast catalog; some classic Williams tunes are missing here. But the excellent material here plays as several well-programmed albums, with the tracks building on one another to cast their spells. This is especially true for the heartbreak tunes, where songs like "May You Never Be Alone," "A House Without Love," "They'll Never Take Her Love from Me," and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" create a sequence where just as you think Williams can't hurt any worse, he sings a verse even more chilling than the last. Don't let the material's simplicity fool you. The man was a genius.
