There's more to Hangnail than meets the eyes. Their latest release, Facing Changes, presents a band that reaches beyond the confines of punk. With this disc, they add a pop freshness that includes vocal harmonies and superb alternative guitar interplay. Of course, there are the chunky punk guitar meanderings like "Second Guess" and "Real Life Illustration," where the band effortlessly lays down its three-chord smack. Drummer Jacob Dosemagen displays pure punk passion on the cuts "With Hands Tied (Behind My Back)" and the title track, where he double-times in a tight pocket. Hangnail cuts deeper on songs like "All That You Wanted" and "Wrong Is Wrong"; here, the band delves into full force rock & roll, reminiscent of Plankeye and All Star United. These tunes feature refined vocal harmonies and unadulterated guitar bliss. Hangnail is meat-and-potatoes rock that ends up being hearty and filling. Facing Changes is a release that should satisfy the appetite.
