Blaze Foley was a legendary character within the Texas music scene. He was a singer-songwriter with a strong wit and a desperate edge and he was close friends with another outlaw musical legend, Townes Van Zandt. His songs were covered by Merle Haggard, who had a hit with “If I Could Only Fly,” Lyle Lovett and John Prine. Longtime Lucinda Williams’ accompanist Gurf Morlix also worked with Blaze and this album is his tribute. It’s a perfect match since Morlix’s voice is as shop-worn as any classic-country musician and his performances are so empathetic as to bring these classics and obscurities to life. “Big Cheeseburgers and Good French Fries” is a beatnik ramble. “No Goodwill Stores In Waikiki” is more inspired verbiage from Foley’s vagabond life. “Clay Pigeons” is the sound of a restless soul trying to wiggle out of his own skin. Morlix’s version of “If I Could Only Fly” is heartbreaking, a slow-driving pound into the heart of Foley’s loneliness and his dream for escaping to a better place.
