Grüvis Malt offers up an interesting style clash on With the Spirit of a Traffic Jam, which finds the musical styles of jazz, hip-hop, and alternative rock colliding with surprisingly relaxed results. These men have found a musical level ground where they mold jazz into the more popular musical styles of 2002, successfully entertaining the listener while providing a new avenue for experiencing the groove-laden vibes. In itself, this isn't an incredible feat; anyone who has heard Mr. Bungle's California album has surely heard the styles combined with better, if not more abstract, results. Yet Grüvis Malt does manage to make jazz more intriguing to those normally into the whole rap/rock scene. Vocally, it does find similarities to Incubus, which is enhanced by the guest appearance of Incubus' DJ Killmore. On the whole, With the Spirit of a Traffic Jam is a laid-back affair, and the band's rapcore-jazz combination is surprisingly not the car wreck it could very well have been if attempted by less talented musicians. ~ Jason D.
