Throughout his career, pianist-composer Glenn Horiuchi has consistently (and successfully) combined together Asian music (especially from Japan) with advanced jazz. This widely available set (most of Horiuchi's other recordings have been done for the tiny AsianImprov label) features the pianist, tenor-saxophonist Francis Wong (who doubles on flute), bassist Taiji Miyagawa and Leon Alexander (on drums and vibes) stretching on seven of Horiuchi's continually intriguing originals. The taiko rhythm (which is prevalent in Japanese music) plus some of the advanced harmonies give Horiuchi's recordings their own unique flavor.
