With the advent of romantic salsa, the arrangements seemed to be playing second fiddle to the aggressive arrangements that had made '70s salsa notorious. Apparently, Gilberto Santa Rosa preferred the romantic, tasteful material — but slower-paced charts. This album was well received by salsa fans, who at the time were immersed in the syrupy, overly romantic, watered-down styles that were highly popular at the time. Nevertheless, Santa Rosa knew something good when he saw it, and his improvisations here just don't seem to falter. In one of those rare instances where background vocalists are allowed to record with the singing bandleader's ensemble, Alex d'Castro sparkles with great prowess in Claudio Baglioni's "Un Poco Mas." ~ José A.
