Released in early 2012 but not part of Salvo's simultaneous expanded catalog reissue program, The Very Best of Gilbert O'Sullivan: A Singer and His Songs is a generous 22-track overview of the singer/songwriter’s career. All the big hits are here — "Nothing Rhymed," "Alone Again (Naturally)," "Clair," "Get Down," "Matrimony," "Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day" — and while the compilers don't spend a considerable time on early byroads (there's none of the precocious post-psychedelia of "Mr. Moody’s Garden," for instance), this offers a good cross-section of his highly produced prime and rivals both Rhino’s 1991 comp The Best of Gilbert O'Sullivan and 2004's The Berry Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan as a first-rate retrospective.
