Ghost Ship has a refreshing vitality that marks it as an emerging worship band of substantial promise. The Christian septet’s debut album, The Good King, combines a redemptive message with an eclectic mix of American roots sounds. Lead singer Cam Huxford—who serves as worship director at Mars Hill Church in downtown Seattle—delivers the tunes in clear, ringing tones with a classic folk edge. His group's freewheeling energy invites comparisons with Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers, particularly on bluegrass-tinged tracks like “Orion” and “The Gospel.” The Good King’s sonic range is wide, moving from the soulful balladry of “Son of David” to the growling blues-rock of “Lion Man.” The band puts its own stamp on traditional hymns like “Holy Holy Holy” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” as well as on its self-composed numbers. Ghost Ship matches chorus hooks and body-grabbing rhythms with Scripture-based lyrics that are both timeless and deeply personal. The Good King sustains a mood of spiritual celebration.
