George Harrison's final studio album was nearing completion when he passed away in November 2001, and it was completed with respect to his wishes by his son, Dhani Harrison, and his good friend and producer Jeff Lynne. Harrison had been working on the album on and off since 1988. "Any Road," the album's leadoff cut, was written as the Cloud Nine album was wrapping up. "Run So Far" appeared on his friend Eric Clapton's 1999 album, Journeyman. The result is an album very much in tune with Harrison's later days, when he was at peace with his legacy and approached making music without concern for the pop charts. Lynne does a nice job giving Harrison's songs a finished veneer, and "Rising Sun," "Any Road," "Looking for My Life," and "Rocking Chair in Hawaii" (sporting a touch of Hank Williams' "Long Gone Lonesome Blues") are among Harrison's finest. A cover of Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler's "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" sheds insight into Harrison's musical interests. The album was finished and released just under a year after his passing.
