Details
[Edit]This excellent LP deserves to be reissued on CD. The IAJRC collectors' label came out with 16 selections by the 1946 Gene Krupa Orchestra that feature the drummer's big band in top form recording for Capitol's radio transcription service. Trumpeter Red Rodney, tenors Charlie Ventura and Buddy Wise, altoist Charlie Kennedy, trombonist Dick Taylor and pianist Teddy Napoleon are the main soloists while the arrangements were provided by Eddie Finckel, Gerry Mulligan and George Williams. Buddy Stewart and Carolyn Grey take a few vocals and the Krupa Trio (with Ventura and Napoleon) is showcased on "10 Ritchie Drive" and "Limehouse Blues." This obscure music, which is a little boppish in spots (including a number titled "Calling Doctor Gillespie") puts the focus on one of Gene Krupa's finest big bands.
