On 2000's Revive, versatile and respected Philippine singer Gary Valenciano turns to Christian-themed music. The songs are either overtly Christian, such as "People Need the Lord," or can be interpreted in a spiritual manner, such as Earth, Wind & Fire's "That's the Way of the World." Valenciano may have received spiritual guidance from above on this album, for his singing and performance throughout are simply marvelous and inspirational. Yet Valenciano always comes up with fine performances, and Revive is another. Unlike a number of so-called singers in the Philippines who get contracts because of their good looks or popularity, Valenciano has genuine talent, and is one of the best singers in the Philippines (he's also handsome, but that has nothing to do with it). Most songs are by Western composers, including respected Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman's tender composition "I Will Be Here." The songs are simply beautiful, and include the moving ballad "Lead Me Lord," the gospel-like "I Believe," on which Valenciano imparts a soulful touch, and "More Than Wonderful," another gospel-influenced song sung in duet with Tricia Amper-Jimenez, who also inspires. A number of songs have some funk, including "Love Is the Answer," "Harvest for the World," "That's the Way of the World," and two songs composed by Valenciano, "That's Why" and "He's Enough"; his compositions stand well amidst the Western-composed music. Gary Valenciano has the goods to become a Christian singer of international stature.
