Experience the Pleasure

At times sounding like Joan Osbourne, Bettie Serveert, the Blake Babies, Bikini Kill, Pat Benetar, and Belly, G-Spot's Experience the Pleasure is a jumbled mix of styles. Depending on what lead singer/songwriter Gail Silverman attempts with each song, this can be a very good or a very bad mix of styles. For example, the Bettie Serveert comparison directly relates to the opening track, which is a good slice of jangly pop called "You Are the One For Me." But the very next song is a wretched Pat Benetar rip off called "Nut in Your World" that completely turns against the mood set by the first song. This pattern continues throughout, as G-Spot jumps from hard rockers to sensitive songwriters with little connecting the two styles besides Silverman's distinct voice. Genre hopping can be an asset to any band, and it is admirable that G-Spot would even try to pull it off. But the band obviously has a much better mind for pop music than hard rock, and if they can't make the two styles get along, they should simply give up on one. As it stands, they've crafted an album that's literally half good, half bad. Thus anyone looking for a few good alternative pop rock numbers should give this a try, otherwise, avoid Experience the Pleasure.
