With the original Mothers of Invention but a memory, Frank Zappa forged ahead with the help of Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan ("Flo & Eddie" to future generations), who reprise their hit with the Turtles, "Happy Together," when they aren't illustrating Zappa's mean satire and deliberately juvenile jokes. Many of the songs were left out of the Zappa movie, 200 Motels. "The Mud Shark" is a legendary rock 'n' roll tale about a reported interaction with members of Vanilla Fudge and Led Zeppelin and their groupies. While the humor serves as a novelty to attract listeners, it's the music that resonates decades on. Ian Underwood's keys and woodwinds, Bob Harris' keyboards, Don Preston's Moog synthesizer and Zappa's versatile guitar work make the challenging instrumentals, "Little House I Used To Live In" and "Peaches En Regalia," and the two-parts of the choir-funky "Willie the Pimp" rewarding experiences that only Zappa could've worked into a set that also features the outlandish blues of "What Kind of Girl Do You Think We Are?" and the spoken word/ rock opera / comic sketches, "Bwana Dik" and "Do You Like My New Car?"
