“The Answer” opens sounding like Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush are having a blast from the get-go of this 1978 arena performance. The simmering strut of “Dragonfly” from Mahogany Rush IV sounds less like David Bowie’s “Fame” here than the album’s heavily produced version, while Marino’s own “A New Rock & Roll” proved that heavy acid-rock was still very much alive and kicking ten years after its inception. Like almost any other hard-rock band of the era Mahogany Rush indulged in bluesy covers. They kept the swampy rhythms of Slim Harpo’s “I’m a King Bee” intact while over-vamping the solo to the delight of the crowd, also taking a less obvious approach to Chuck Berry’s staple “Johnny B. Goode.” Closing with a spot-on version of Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” proves that sometimes it’s perfectly fine to give the people exactly what they want.
