Frank Foster, who in 1995 willingly gave up leadership of the Count Basie Orchestra after nine years of traveling the world (and playing "Jumpin' at the Woodside" and his own "Shiny Stockings" on a nightly basis), is heard here at the top of his form. Whether swinging on his blues "You're Only as Old as You Look," showing off the influence of John Coltrane during some modal material, playing some intense soprano on the title track, or jamming on rhythm changes with guest trumpeter Derrick Gardner during "Derricksterity," Foster (67 at the time) makes every note count. The all-star rhythm section sounds quite inspired by the veteran tenor's ideas and enthusiasm (Scott and McBride have many excellent short solos), while trumpeter Gardner contributes a pair of fiery statements. This is one of Frank Foster's finest small-group dates and is highly recommended.
