Recorded live by Pomplamoose's Jack Conte at his Northern California farmhouse studio, San Francisco’s Foxtails Brigade captured four songs that it aptly describes as “experimental acoustic chamber-pop indie folk.” “Don’t Look Down” opens with Barbary Coast utility musician Josh Pollock playing a collection of junkyard percussion. Over this, silky-voiced chanteuse Laura Weinbach plays acoustic guitar, violin, and standup bass. What’s immediately noticeable in this performance is how Foxtails Brigade can play with an airtight flawlessness that still ebbs and flows with live energy. The following “Pan-Asian Delight” is a diametrically airy song where Weinbach coos elongated notes over lilting violin parts and playful glockenspiel. A little more than halfway through the tune, the tempos pick up momentum before shape-shifting from a fairytale beauty to an Edward Gorey–esque darkness. Weinbach’s impressive vocal phrasing is best exemplified in “We Are Not Ourselves.”
