Under the loving guidance of Maria Muldaur, this collection honors the rich legacy of Memphis Minnie (a.k.a. Lizzie Douglas), one of the first female blues artists to write and record her own songs. These tracks—combining previously released cuts with new recordings—capture the earthy wit and soulful yearning that made Minnie such an influential figure. Muldaur enlists top-rank players like guitarist Del Rey and Steve James to help her deliver “Me and My Chauffeur Blues,” “I’m Sailin’," and “Crazy Cryin’ Blues” with authentic sass and spirit. Her rendition of the swaggering “Tricks Ain’t Walkin’"—written by Lucille Bogan but popularized by Minnie—is a particular delight. Bonnie Raitt contributes a jaunty “Ain’t Nothin’ in Ramblin',” Rory Block gets steamy on “When You Love Me," and Ruthie Foster offers sound advice on “Keep Your Big Mouth Closed.” Phoebe Snow’s slow-burning take on “In My Girlish Days” (from her 1976 album It Looks Like Snow) and Koko Taylor’s ferocious version of “Black Rat Swing” (from her 2007 release Old School) help round out this portrait of Minnie’s music.
