Winners of the coveted Juno award, Canada's Fathead maintains an extremely high musical standard on 2002's First Class Riff-Raff. The funk- and R&B-influenced blues numbers featured on this Electro-Fi offering hardly signify a musical departure for the group, as Fathead wisely refuses to tamper with their successful sound. Mellow, funky tunes like "Shake This Feeling" and "Same Old Thing" are just two standouts in a track list stuffed with top-flight material. The soul-drenched vocals and the slick guitar licks are sublime, but Fathead's rhythmic versatility really propels this record with unique and comfortable grooves for every tune. Contemporary blues fans unfamiliar with Canada's finest purveyors of the genre will do well to search out First Class Riff-Raff or any release from Fathead.
