France chanteuse Fabienne Delsol sang with the fabulously retro London group the Bristols for two albums, and in 2004 decided to make a go of it on her own, releasing her solo debut, No Time For Sorrows. Her affinity for ‘60s pop (and specifically, a French style called yé-yé, similar to what Americans might call “go-go” music, featuring female singers like Françoise Hardy and France Gall) is spectacularly authentic, and on Between You and Me, Delsol continues celebrating the genre. “I’m Gonna Catch Me A Rat” might sound like a fine idea to any males fitting the bill; Delsol is a purring feline, stealthily making her way through simmering guitar riffs and shimmering tambourines waiting for the right moment to pounce. Delsol visits the ‘50s (a cover of the Jades’ doo-wop tune “Leave Her for Me”) as well as Merseybeat (she does the Searchers’ “Don’t Throw Your Love Away”), and she adds a little country piano to Hardy’s “Pas Gentille.” Between You and Me packs a wallop of vintage fun and charm.
