The title On Stage would seem to suggest a live album, but Eydie Gorme's seventh album for ABC-Paramount Records shows no audible signs of having been recorded in concert. Rather, it is a studio set. The only stagey aspect of it is that it is a very lively collection of uptempo, neo-swing arrangements, and one could readily imagine Gorme before a big band (with strings) belting out these songs. There are songs that are nominally ballads, such as "But Not for Me" and "I Got Lost in His Arms," as well as numbers that are usually performed in a bluesy mode like "Alright, Okay, You Win" and "One for the Road." But Gorme takes the energy level up a notch even on these, bringing her usual ebullience to bear whether she is singing of happy love or sad. If she did bring this set onto a stage, it would be a show worth catching.
