This excellent collectors' LP has all of the music from the Erskine Hawkins big band's second, third, fourth and fifth recording sessions. The debut date was skipped over most likely because it had four vocals, while only five of these 16 selections have singing. The music is primarily heated Harlem swing with such major soloists as Erskine Hawkins and Dud Bascomb on trumpets, tenorman Paul Bascomb and pianist Avery Parrish. Although none of Hawkins' hits are on this album, there are many memorable romps, including "Swingin' In Harlem," "Uproar Shout," and "Lost In the Shuffle." The Classics CD series, which is quite complete in documenting Erskine Hawkins' early years, has largely superseded this enjoyable album.
