Extreme sports and hard rock seemingly go hand in hand with one another, as skateboarding and freestyle motorcross have embraced the crunchy sludge and enraged attitude of heavy metal and hardcore. Since this is common, it should come as no surprise that professional snowboarders Todd Schlosser and Dave Lee formed their own rock band. Eris shares similarities with post-hardcore outfit Helmet as well as the spacy stoner rock of Kyuss. The songs offered up on the band's self-titled debut album are equally in-your-face and easy to bang one's head to, yet without the masculine rage common with such acts. The laid-back aggression found here is more in tune with the underground rockers in Fu Manchu, as Eris has a way of making moody hard rock that is catchy and memorable. Songs such as "Soundtrack" and "Absolute Zero" stand out as the most enjoyable on the album, yet more importantly, Eris' debut recalls the best elements of the aforementioned acts superbly while retaining their own custom sound. ~ Jason D.
