Divas know good music. Initially Eric Hutchinson was groomed to break on Madonna's Maverick Records, but after the label folded Hutchinson remained largely unknown until blogosphere sublebrity Perez Hilton fawned over an advance copy of his third album. Of course it helps that the songs here are well worthy of all accolades. Sounds Like This reveals Hutchinson as a soulful singer and a blossoming songwriter who records the kinds of organically festive jams that can get the most rhythmically challenged of folks to toe-tap in time. The album opening piano pounding funk of "OK, It's Alright With Me" feels like walking into a party already in full swing. The stomping "You Don't Have To Believe Me" could be The Black Crowes' Chris Robinson auditioning for a remake of Jesus Christ Superstar. And the reggae tinged "Rock & Roll" is an outstanding insta-hit that will bring beachy warmth to your speakers. The two live bonus cuts recorded from the World Café prove that Hutchinson doesn't need fancy production to sound as good as he naturally does.
