Available in two configurations, this retrospective either covers just Eric Clapton’s studio work for the sessions of 1974’s 461 Ocean Boulevard and 1975’s There’s One in Every Crowd or adds an expanded version of the 1975 live album E.C. Was Here and a solid jam session at Criteria Studios with Freddie King. Considering how revelatory Clapton can be in concert, the 55-track all-inclusive set makes better sense than the 35-track Give Me Strength: The ’74/’75 Studio Recordings. 461 Ocean Boulevard was Clapton’s comeback album after his struggle with heroin. The performances show this reaffirmation for life in both versions of “Getting Acquainted” and the acoustic take of “Please Be with Me.” The extras from There’s One in Every Crowd include “I Found a Love,” “Fools Like Me," and the laid-back reggae of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” Live performances are nearly tripled, with “Layla,” “Little Wing,” “Crossroads," and “I Shot the Sheriff” making appearances, while Clapton enjoys the interplay with Freddie King on four tracks.
