[Edit]Superstar pairings are often better on paper than on CD, but Riding With the King mostly lives up to its big-name billing.The album is a combination of classic blues such as"Key to the Highway" and "Worried Life Blues," and contemporary R&B-flavored tunes, including a rollicking version of John Hiatt's title track and a muscular mid-tempo take on the Sam & Dave scorcher, "Hold On, I'm Coming." One unexpected pleasure is how wellKing and Clapton's voices work together. As one would expect, the album is packed with licks, but this is no formulaic cutting contest. Eric Clapton is tasteful and restrained, while B.B. King energetically delivers his signature sound. And to ensure that there's no shortage of guitar, King and Clapton are backed by able veterans Andy Fairweather-Low (also part of Clapton's regular band), Doyle Bramhall, and Jimmie Vaughan, and Joe Sample adds some fine keyboard work to the mix. In choosing a title for the album, Clapton may have graciously conceded the driver's seat to the elder bluesman, but the music is pure collaboration.
