Empty Set is a loose consortium of musicians headed up by Ron DeVore on vocals and bass, and Billy Frank on drums and occasional vocals. As revolving guitarists and singers sit in, the group turns out sleaze, grind, and pop classic after semi-classic, all with varying degrees of slop and expertise in homage to their hometown, Detroit. Steve Wynn takes on a negligible role on the infectious original "Reckless Infatuation" and on a fairly effective interwoven version of "Run Through the Jungle"/"TV Eye." The MC5's Mike Davis with Dread Zeppelin's Jon Pah Wah gives John Lee Hooker's "Motor City Is Burning" just the right measure of rock fire. "Not Tonight" freaks out in the tradition of any number of former Motor City madmen. Ray Manzarek and SRC's Scott Richardson brought their "Mystery Doll" to the party, but declined to perform it. Starting to make sense? With lots of names and lots of songs, it's sort of confusing but better not to think about it; better rather, to surrender to the raw rock experience.
