It's a testament to Elvis Presley's immense talents that no amount of arbitrary record company decisions could dim the energy and excitement of an Elvis LP in the '50s. This "original soundtrack" to Presley's second film is only partly a collection of songs from the movie; half of the tracks are from sessions in January 1957. This set didn't feature many of Elvis' current hits, as was typical for albums of that era. Yet among the included singles was "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear," aimed squarely at his young female teenage audience. It landed at No. 1; the album's title track was its b-side and got stuck at merely No. 2. Presley's range let him tear holes into the gleeful and silly "Party" and "Hot Dog" while bringing guitarist Scotty Moore to the forefront for "Mean Woman Blues" and "Got a Lot o' Livin' to Do." With The Jordanaires providing their trusty backing vocal accompaniment, Elvis nails the western-sounding "Lonesome Cowboy." A stomping cover of Ivory Joe Hunter's "I Need You So" and a gentle rendition of Cole Porter's "True Love" further display Presley's impressive range.
