Elvis Presley's second album, simply titled Elvis, was released seven months after his iconic RCA debut, Elvis Presley. With the exception of Arthur Crudup's "So Glad You're Mine," which had been taped at the January 1956 session for the debut, the songs here were all recorded on the first three days of September 1956 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood. Otis Blackwell wrote "Paralyzed" exclusively for the occasion, and many of the songwriters here would appear throughout Presley's career. Presley chose three Little Richard songs—"Rip It Up," "Long Tall Sally," and "Ready Teddy"—for his solid backing trio of Scotty Moore, Bill Black, and D.J. Fontana to rock out with, as was their natural way. True to the era, several of Elvis' hit singles were left off this set, while "Love Me" charted at No. 2 and "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again" went to No. 19. Red Foley's country tearjerker "Old Shep," a favorite of Presley's as a child, nicely fleshes out the album.
