A dozen Number One singles from various U.S. and UK charts, plus five more hits, and voila! Rocket Man is a tightly packed album that spends most of its long playing time demonstrating why Elton John ruled the school in the ’70s. Voraciously musical, he won with snarky ballads (“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”), titanic mock-rock (“Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”), soul pastiches (“Philadelphia Freedom”) and a surprisingly wonderful re-imagining of a Beatles classic (“Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”). He further globalized his stature with the Lion King centerpiece “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” which will haunt the ear canals of at least a couple of generations of children. Exposed to most any of the other singles collected here, they’d no doubt find more reasons to love the guy.
