While Dwight Yoakam stopped sending singles to the upper reaches of the country charts in the 21st century, the man who came to fame by championing old-school country music values has maintained a remarkably consistent artistic standard. The Bakersfield honky-tonk style at the core of Yoakam's sound when he emerged in the '80s never left his heart or his head; Yoakam cowrote 2000's "The Sad Side of Town" with Bakersfield baron Buck Owens, while three tracks here hail from his 2007 Owens homage, Dwight Sings Buck, and the Yoakam-penned "I Wanna Love Again" feels like an Owens hit that never was. Of course, Yoakam's oeuvre as represented here also includes everything from a cover of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" to a previously unreleased duet featuring pop siren Michelle Branch, but he makes it all part of the sonic thread he started stitching two decades earlier. Most importantly, he makes it sound fresh.
