Though mostly known for straight jazz releases, Blue Note Records also put out some seriously funky albums over the years. Droppin' Science has these on full display; it's clearly aimed at the younger generation who discovered many of these artists thanks to samples from various rap songs. The tracklisting here is a virtual smorgasbord of classic hip-hop loops, and seasoned ears will definitely recognize joints that have been reworked by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest (Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew"), The Beastie Boys (Jeremy Steig's "Howling for Judy"), and Black Moon (Donald Bird's ridiculously catchy "Wind Parade"). Whether you're a classic hip-hop fan, a cratedigging breaks DJ, a jazz-funk connoisseur, or just a fan of good beats, this is a stellar compilation without a weak song in the mix. It's a perfect example of the timeless power of music to bridge the gap between multiple genres and generations.
