[Edit]While most rappers give answers, DJ Shadow questions his audience. What does your soul look like? What does midnight in a perfect world sound like? How can you build steam with a grain of salt? This Davis, California DJ thinks visually, to the point that the mid-song interludes on "Transmission 1-3" seem influenced by the movie Angel Heart. Throughout, Shadow weaves sampled elements (sustained piano loop and a tricked-out chorale over a beat) into a beautiful suite. All cracks and pops on the album are real, a remnant of Endtroducing's magical cut-and-paste art form. This sonic confessional was just what hip-hop needed in 1996-a temperate, patient instrumental record filled with moods and emotions that still linger and resonate today.
