Rigney is a very experienced and able fiddler; there's no doubt about that. And he loves his Louisiana music, as is evident from several of the selections here. On top of that, he has a very capable band behind him. Everything's fine on songs like "Maman Rosin" and "Co Fa," but when they step out into covers of "Boppin' the Blues" or Hank Williams' "Jambalaya," they come across as a good bar band, nothing more. To be fair, they do mix it up a bit, including material like "Annie's Reel" and "Firefly Waltz," and finishing up with a barnstorming version of the standard "Orange Blossom Special." Too often, though, this seems like less than the sum of its parts — well-played, good material, but it never comes together and to create something greater than itself. Very likely they're better live, but this time in the studio a certain little magic is missing. Not bad, but not outstanding, either.
