During this Paris concert (released for the first time on a 1994 CD) the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet of 1965 (with James Moody on tenor and flute, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Christopher White and drummer Rudy Collins) emphasizes Latin rhythms over straightahead swinging. The great trumpeter never really cuts loose and is often outshone by Moody who has "Umh, Umh" as a flute feature. "Chega De Saudade" is the best performance, "One Note Samba" is listenable but not memorable, "Con Alma" and "Tin Tin Deo" are typical and Gillespie has a moderately humorous vocal on the calypso "Oh Joe." Overall the set is a disappointment.
