[Edit]Subtitle notwithstanding, this compilation consists almost entirely of tracks from the first half of the '80s, focusing on the stylistic realm where postpunk and dance music intermingled on concert stages and DJ playlists of cutting-edge underground clubs. Variously dubbed everything from "punk funk" to "mutant disco," the scene crossed both geographical and genre borders. Accordingly, Disco Not Disco encompasses everything from the sleek synthscapes of "Kaddish" by the androgynous French New Romantic chanteuse Ronny to the Latin-tinged, brass-punctuated funk frenzy of Konk's "Your Life," the angular British postpunk of The Delta 5's "Mind Your Own Business," and the primal proto-house of "Sharevari" by the Detroit electro outfit A Number of Names. The crucial sonic paradigm shared by this broad array of artists is a blend of club-savvy grooves and punk-informed edge. The mid-'70s are represented here by the synth-laced jazz-funk of the U.K. fusion band Isotope, bearing a visceral funkiness simpatico with the track's '80s neighbors.
